A private, offline alternative to MacWhisper

MacWhisper is a good app, and for some jobs it is still the one to buy. Here is an honest account of what VocoSafe AI does differently, and where MacWhisper wins.

Free to download. Manual dictation and file transcription have no time limit.

The short version. MacWhisper is built primarily around transcribing files: batches of recordings, meetings, subtitles. VocoSafe AI is built around dictation: talking into whatever app you already have open, with the recording starting and stopping on its own.

If your day is spent processing audio files, MacWhisper is the better tool and this page will not pretend otherwise. If your day is spent writing, read on.

Where MacWhisper is the better buy

Three cases, and they are not edge cases:

You need an audio production workflow

Watch folders that transcribe on their own, YouTube links, SRT and VTT subtitle export, speaker labeling. VocoSafe AI does none of these, and batch file transcription is not live yet either. Buy MacWhisper.

You have an Intel Mac

VocoSafe AI requires Apple Silicon. There is no workaround and none is planned. The models are compiled for the neural engine.

You record meetings

Capturing system audio from Zoom or Teams is a MacWhisper feature. VocoSafe AI records from the microphone only.

Where VocoSafe AI is the better buy

You want to talk instead of type

Voice activation means no holding a key down and no hunting for a button. You start talking, it starts writing; you stop, it stops.

You are not working in English

The whole interface is translated into 18 languages, not just the speech recognition. If you would rather not use software in a second language, this matters.

You want a choice of engine

Whisper is accurate but slow; NVIDIA Parakeet is dramatically faster on Apple Silicon; SenseVoice is strong on Asian languages. Switch between them in a click.

Privacy is a requirement, not a preference

Nothing is sent anywhere. If you want to prove that rather than trust it, block the app in a firewall such as LuLu and it keeps working.

Pricing

VocoSafe AI is free to download. Manual dictation, audio-file transcription, history and basic grammar checking stay free with no time limit. PRO adds voice activation and the local AI grammar pass, as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time Lifetime purchase, with a one-month free trial. Current prices are on the pricing page.

MacWhisper’s prices differ between its direct edition and its App Store edition and have changed more than once, so rather than quote a number that may already be stale, this page will simply say: check their site. Compare like for like, because the two editions are not priced the same.

Try it before deciding

The free tier is not a trial with a timer. Dictate with it for a week and see whether it fits how you work.
