Start here, because it decides most of it. VoiceInk is published under the GPL. You can read every line, build it yourself, and verify what it does with your audio rather than take anyone’s word for it. VocoSafe AI is closed source. If auditability is what you are shopping for, VoiceInk wins and nothing below changes that.
What follows is for people weighing other things: transcribing files, working in a language other than English, and buying through Apple rather than compiling.

For a tool that hears everything you say, “trust me” is a weaker promise than “here is the source”. That is a legitimate reason to pick VoiceInk over VocoSafe AI, and this page will not argue with it.
Power Mode changes how dictation works depending on the app or website in front of you. VocoSafe AI has one mode.
Names, jargon, drug names, product codes. VoiceInk has a personal dictionary; VocoSafe AI does not have one yet.
VoiceInk supports macOS 14. VocoSafe AI needs Apple Silicon and macOS 15, with no workaround.
VoiceInk is dictation only. VocoSafe AI also transcribes an audio file you already have, such as an interview or a lecture. Batch transcription, .txt export and support for M4A and video files are submitted to Apple for review, not live yet.
The whole interface is translated into 18 languages, not just the speech recognition. And SenseVoice is there specifically for Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
The free VoiceInk route means Xcode and a build. Installing from the Mac App Store is a click, updates arrive on their own, and refunds go through Apple.
The punctuation and grammar pass runs on a local Qwen model. Nothing about your text leaves the machine to get cleaned up.
VocoSafe AI is free to download. Manual dictation, audio file transcription, history and basic grammar checking stay free with no time limit. PRO adds voice activation and the local AI grammar pass, as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time Lifetime purchase, with a one-month free trial. Current prices are on the pricing page.
VoiceInk is free from source and a one-time purchase pre-built, with the price depending on how many Macs you need. Check their site for the current tiers.
The free tier is not a trial with a timer. Both apps can be tried for nothing, so the honest advice is to run both for a week.
